This is not so much a mystery. It is an image of a very scarce shoulder title in wear.

Check out this one. You can just make out the same patch


(PS, that's yours truly with a home-made patch so it doesn't really count. I took some spare greatcoat material and had a friend, who owns an embroidering machine, make up a few samples. We used beige thread on the battledress background.)
