What is this Badge?
Can anyone tell me the origin of this Badge please? Size is 4.5 cm x 4.5 cm. Possibly made from Brass. I have enclosed 2 pics to aid identification.
thank you |

The cross is the State Badge of New South Wales, Australia, being a detail taken from the coat of arms of the State. Worn as a badge in this form by the Royal New South Wales Regiment.
Edited to add: I would have expected to see a scroll underneath it, bearing the words 'Royal N.S.W. Regiment', but perhaps that was added later.

Might it be the cross belt pouch badge (or sabretache) of the "QVC" New South Wales Regiment?

Hi lionheart
It is the standard pattern of the NSW Military Forces, circa 1900. Made in gilt, silver, brass and white metal and used as a cap, belt buckle plate and as yours is a pouch badge. Pouch badge because it has screw post attachments BTW, its not a kings crown, as it is circa Queen Victoria, but carried through after her death and its worth between $25-$100. they are one of the more common badges for the period. nice item and the pouch badge is harder to get than the cap badge BC |

In his book, AUSTRALIAN ARMY BADGES Part 2 1900-1930 Cossum shows what appears to be an identical badge which he describes as:
NSW DEFENCE FORCES STAFF Height: Hat,Cap, pouch and crossbelt badge 46mm Finishes: Gilded brass, whitemetal, silver. * Badges made with different attachments ie Lugs, screws and slide attachments ** The badge was also carried over from the pre federation era. I am not sure how carrying it over from the pre federation era would have affected the crown. Grebert describes a similar badge with a similar crown 47mm high and as being "early 1900s" Donny B. |
