Hello Griff, I've read on the forum that 7 seeds around the centre of the rose is a good sign, the one shown has only 6.
Also the lugs are positioned on the rose rather than the scrolls on a genuine example .
However you may want an expert opinion and my is nothing of the kind.
Regards Tony.

Thanks Tony, I looked at the script and its chiselled, not rounded. That's what attracted me to this one. Hopefully, there is a Lancs Hussars boff on here that can confirm

N.B. I was told... some time ago, that the Gaunt made badge had seven and the Firmin made badge had six seeds around the center point?

Being one of those badges that have been so heavily faked, I just don't know either. The scroll does look good, but I would expect the lugs to be on the rose as previously mentioned.

Previously Keith Hooks collection, GN is currently selling/sold a few of them
The only 6 stamen example is the small bladed bronze badge bottom left

Unfortunately officer badges cannot be used as a reference regarding OR badges; they are a law unto themselves.
The number of the stamen I would not trust as indicator of originality.

....look at the detail CB, the shortened leaves between the petals for example ( a feature in the Firmin OSD). The chiselled script. The seeding in the scrolls etc. Note also that the Gaunt IY OSD has the same placement of the blades compared to the loops below.

When I get it it will be cleaned up and better pics.

Not a genuine badge, in my belief.

I agree CB.

Nice chiselled letters on this WM fake. The LH cap badge was never struck in WM.

It is simply an older repro. Better quality than the die cutters whose wares dominate in the Marsh catalogue.

.....well, after a good clean, here it is. "White Metal" and Electro welded loops. FAKE

At £2 it has paid for itself in experience Quite impressed at the level of detail to be honest.

Just like the Yorkshire Dragoons I suspect the abundance of these badges shows that original dies were used to restrike them and then later fakers have had new dies cut. I also have a niggling doubt about the quantity of genuine 19th Hussars 1898 elephants being sold as original but that's another matter!

I do not agree about the LH being a restrike.

I’m yet to see any other ranks LH with 6 dots around the centre which I’d consider genuine. And whilst I do not collect officers badges I highly doubt this example was the product on an original officers die.

Certainly I agree re the Yorkshire Dragoons which has been heavily restruck from the original FN die. Many found with ‘ENGLAND’ marks.

.... "IF" a six pip ORs can be found with proper "braised" loops then we have potential? The white metal would be different as well... the fake didn't stand up well to a good polish (also a bit thin). Period white metal would have sparkled.
