Default 3rd Battalion Welsh Guards Grouping

Really lucked out with this purchase - an entire grouping to a guardsman who would have served with my grandfather.

Details from the seller :

“ Small grouping that belonged to a veteran who served in the Welsh Guards during WW2. There are four titles, all different but the bottom two I would say are worn as a pair, uniform removed. The 6th Armoured patches are mismatched but looking at the matching condition and the remaining thread they do look like the pair he wore on his BD. The ribbon bar shows he was one of the first in North Africa and then went into Italy, the KD stripes would match for both theatres. Found also was the WG cap badge and metal shoulder title. This little group ''came in '' last week with the name given as Mathews who lived at Taff Mead Embankment, Grangetown, Cardiff.”

It also came with some odd buttons and a few officers pips.

The ‘two believed as a pair’ are the bottom two in my photographs here.

I’ve read everything I can find on this board about WG titles and thought that this grouping may help others determine ‘wartime’ originality of titles.

… and some of the titles …

I’d be very interested if anyone has a single of the ‘non serif’ one - it appears to have had press studs on the rear at some point. I’ve seen other 1st Guards Brigade titles with these types of studs in the past.

They’ve all been removed from either KD or BD.

… and the KD brassard / armlet / armband … my grandfather is wearing this exact one in this fairly famous photo. He is sitting here bare headed in the Olmo Pass, Route 71 West of Arezzo, 16.07.1944 …

As an aside, another two that came through the door this morning separate to this grouping. The top ‘smaller text’ example is definitely wartime, not sure about the other.

Fabulous ! I’m always on the hunt for anything Welsh Guards related - particularly if it relates to the Mediterranean Theatre.

I’d love to find another to match this one !

Thank you - I’m delighted with it all. Particularly love the KD armband as it’s exactly the type worn by my grandfather in the picture.

16th July 1944, Route 71 at the L’Olmo Pass just West of Arezzo. 3WG objectives (for the previous day) were the hills on either side of where this pic was taken.

My grandfather is sat with no head dress.
