Warrant Officer?
These badges follow the design of the British Army WO1 Conductor RAOC/RLC and Master Gunner RA but colour and style looks Canadian to me!
Positive identification and information please? Tim

I don't think it is Canadian. With the embroidered/merrowed edge, I would expect a Canadian badge to have the Canadian Coat of Arms.

Phil,
Thanks. It does not appear to be Australian or New Zealand either. Tim

Is it the rank badge of a Conductor? Tim

The badge shown is indeed a Conductor's. A google search will return several results on the origin and history of conductors. There are articles that state that Conductor was also an appointment in the Canadian and Australian armies. When Canada had Conductors the same badge was used as for the British army.

Both the RCE and the RCOC had the appointment of Conductor. The Canadian Coat of Arms was authorized for use in 1948 as the badge for Warrant Officer 1st Class. There are Conductor badges made with the Canadian Coat of Arms, and iirc, there were both king's crown and queen's crown patterns. The appointment disappeared with integration. Perhaps this is an appointment worth reinstituting?

As far as I know the green backing to the Irish quarter was used by mistake during the 1940's, certainly on the printed and embroidered versions of the Royal Arms produced in 1945. So maybe a less well developed Commonwealth country continuing the design.

Not seen this design before and in British use should have a Scarlet or Red border post 1952, or no border for RASC Staff Sargeant Major First Class pre 1967
other than for the Brown on Green or Sand 1970/80's Combat Versions. The appointment lapsed in the Australian Army in the late 1940s, but was reintroduced in July 2005. The first six Conductors were appointed in April 2006 but they wear the Australian Coat of Arms I would love an example for my collection! where did the come from? http://homepage.ntlworld.com/mike.co...DNANCE/46b.htm There is a small no border QC example with no proof of wear Last edited by Mike_2817; 23-09-12 at 06:05 PM. |

Forgot about this one:
Another example of British 'Royal Arms in Wreath' within a circle is this I believe to be a prototype as it is not listed in COSA of a badge for No6 KD Dress. Badge of ranks for NCO's are listed but Mat Regs do not state anything special for WO's Note that unlike picture in post one, it has the correct border, but has no colour! and is I beleave post 1988 I obtained it via a contact who worked at one time at the MOD site in Caversfield, Bicester Last edited by Mike_2817; 24-09-12 at 05:31 PM.
