Tartan Reference Guide
Hi folks,
I'm trying to make a reference guide for the swatches of tartan worn behind Worldwide Scottish Unit badges. I have a few already done as illustrated. Most units have a set or preferred pattern or position of the check worn with the badge and I'd like to try and document as many as possible. When done I'll Illustrate them with the badge on as well as without. If anyone has any pictures of these and the way which they were worn I would be most grateful. Regards, Bill

Bill,
An excellent idea. Here is a Liverpool Scottish glengarry badge with Forbes tartan backing. Despite what Gaylor says in " Military Badge Collecting " 3rd Edition, Appendix J,I have never seen the backing with "a diagonal intersection of white lines " but only as shown with the white lines running horizontally and vertically. Great idea. I'd planned on putting together a photo library of tartans some years ago. including showing them in wear in "black and white" photos as an aid to identifying regiments from old photos.
Never got off the ground really. |

Government Tartan, as worn by The Calgary Highlanders. Correct swatch is cut at the intersection of the double green lines in the sett. Not always adhered to. Tartan is frayed at the edges, but examples are found where this is not done. 2Lt Mills, June 2008 (Calg Highrs photo) Lloyd Zwick, Mar 2006 (Ed Storey photo) Pte William Cary Brown, DCM ca. 1944 (Calg Highrs photo)

Thanks for the pictures and advice guys,
I've done quite a bit on the guide and if anyone would like a copy please drop me a line as the PDF file is too big to load onto the forum. It is still a work in progress and there are some notes at the bottom of the guide of items I am still looking for and pictures I still need. I am still looking for other Commonwealth Scottish Units. I am still looking for confirmation on the following: 1. Were RHF Pipers TOS Badges worn on Dress Erskine Flash? 2. Was 4/5 Seaforth worn on TOS/tartan or glengarry? 3. Was KOSB 4th Bn worn with Buccleuch Flash on TOS? 4. Was Glasgow Highlanders worn on TOS with Black Watch flash? 5. Was Tyneside Scottish worn on TOS with tartan flash? 6. What tartan does Glasgow & Strathclyde UOTC wear? 7. Do New Brunswick Scottish wear a TOS or tartan flash? 8. What tartan did 51 Sigs Regt wear and was it on TOS or beret? 9. Is Essex & Kent Scottish Officer’s TOS flash different from ORs version? I am looking for black and white, high resolution, line drawings of the following: 1. Royal Highland Fusiliers Piper’s Badge. 2. Nova Scotia Highlanders Badge. 3. RHF of Canada Badge. 4. Essex & Kent Scottish Badge. This is a work in progress. If you see any errors or can add anything to this list please let me know. Any help would be much appreciated. cameronian50@hotmail.com Thanks again, Bill

Would you be able to ID the tartan on this Tam O'Shanter? It was used on Op Fingal around 2003.

Are you sure it's not a similar tartan, like MacDuff?

Hi Leigh
I checked on that already but the tartan has a yellow stripe in it so not McDuff. Cheers, Alex |

RHF Piper TOS
Bill,
I am a new member to the forum and saw your question regarding RHF Pipers wearing their distinctive cap badge on a Red Erskine flash for their TOS. I know I am about 11 years too late. I have a RHF Piper's Tam with Red Erskine tartan backing (see attached images).* There is a hole in the flash at the same place as on the Tam flash worn by the rest of the regiment.* Because of this, and the lack of two holes for lugs, it is likely the Pipers wore a white hackle on their TOS*(which I added). The TOS itself is very well made (1960s/70s?). Unfortunately it is missing the POM. I hope this helps your project, though you are probably long finished!* I enjoy your site and use it to help me identify and look for new Scottish headgear to add to my collection. I started collecting when I was at Aberdeen Uni and continued collecting after joining the Army (U.S.). Respectfully, Reid |

Re the B7W pic of RHF pipers badge; does this help? Not truly a monochrome image just one I have fiddled around with!
