Uniforms 135 years ago
Amongst a number of recently acquired old prints showing Essex VB Officers in all their glory and finery was this.
It shows a group of what I believe to be Officers of several distinct and different Battalions/Regiments. Some of the other prints are dated 1885, 1886 and 1888, I expect this was taken in the same period. Unfortunately, at the moment my scanner is about as much use as a one legged man at an arse kicking competition, therefore the attached are from shots taken on my phone. I have previewed this post and seen that the pictures have all attached correct way about, but when clicked into they change into various angles, none being the correct way..................apologies, but I'm sure some of you more technically adept than I will rectify this problem. Not just officers, there appear couple of Foot Guards NCO's on the back row, certainly a lovely image.

Superb picture of what seems to be a training course for Volunteer Battalions with perhaps some SNCO Foot Guards instructors at the rear and flank, although later convention would usually put them at the front. I suppose it depends upon what type of course it was. So far I can see the following regiments:
1. Royal Fusiliers VB 2. York & Lancaster Regiment VB 3. King’s (Liverpool) Regiment VB 4. Fusiliers (variant with smaller grenade from the pre-1881 pattern cap that was originally paired with a number) 5. Royal Scots VB 6. Cheshire Regiment VB 7. Rifle Brigade VBs (various) 8. King’s Royal Rifle Corps VBs (various) 9. Various other VBs wearing grey or rifle green uniforms whose insignia is too indistinct to identify. 10. Some other ‘English’ Fusiliers whose badges are not clear enough to ID. NB. The Foot Guards include Lance Sergeants of Grenadier and Coldstream Guards far right and Gold (i.e. full) sergeants of the Grenadier and [erratum] Scots Guards at left rear. My guess is that this is a course for unit Adjutants and I’d date the image to around 1885. The senior ranking officers appear to be the Royal Scot (Lt Col) and the Hampshire (Major) seated centrally. There is also an elderly, bewhiskered chap in grey with dark cuffs who might also be a Lt Col, but I cannot be sure. There are no Irish units as they had no VBs. Quite a few of the units shown would go on to become a part of the London Regiment in 1908. Last edited by Toby Purcell; 03-01-20 at 01:11 PM. |

Only one Coldstreamer there, the other Full Sergeant shown is Scots Guards.
