Help with identification please
Evening all
Can anyone help with the identification of this badge please? The badge is quite substantial at 7.5cm X 5cm and appears to have had blades (E.W) to the reverse which are now missing. Seems too big to me to be a cap badge and may be the centre of a helmet plate? I'm sure it will be obvious to someone but I can't figure out what the M C stands for.... Any comments or help will as always be gratefully received! Best wishes Kev Last edited by ShortestinBattalion; 25-02-14 at 09:48 PM. Reason: punctuation |

Hi Kev
This is a helmet plate of the Monmouthshire Constabulary, although the one shown in Badges of Office is black. Yours appears to have some surface pitting, perhaps the blackening has been lost over time - or it may, of course, have not been black in the first place. Best Graham

I totally missed the fact that it may not be military, many thanks both!!
There is a fair bit of surface pitting Graham, the front of the helmet plate has what I assumed to be a good few years grime build-up but the reverse is definitely darker than the front. Whilst I know this doesn't mean it was definitely blackened, looking at it a bit more closely perhaps it isn't grime on the front. Really appreciate the help and the sharing of knowledge! BW Kev |

The badge was only ever used with a black (Berlin black) finish, the "MC" standing out in white metal relief. There is a Victorian Crowned version also. Dave. |
