King Edward's Horse

K and K describes the badge as being made of brass followed by guilding metal. Gaylor makes no mention of the metal but all the examples I have ever seen have been in white metal. All recent e-bay examples have been white metal. Anyone have any advice on whether white metal is okay for this badge?

any idea what metal the restrike sellers are producing this badge in (thats the sellers that actually state they sell restrikes!)

because if its white metal I would proceed with great caution on my quest to obtain an original.....

I would say this badge should be uncommon at the least - are you seeing a few about ?

Strangely enough they seem to be quite common over the last 2 months, hence my caution. Strangely enough I acquired a 2nd King Edward's Horse which seemed bona fide in brass. Ref the metal used, the descriptions used are 'white metal'. I have had such a badge from many year's ago which is white metal but I had always suspected it and was verifying it through this forum. Thanks for the cautionary advice.

In Military Badges of the British Empire 1914-18 they have three badges for this regiment the first regiment listed is King Edwards Horse (the Kings Overseas Dominions Regiment )(Hussars) 1901AND THEY STAYED IN IRELAND and secondly King Edwards Horse 1914 they are all the SAME pattern badge with the exception of the 1914 regiment and one was smaller and voided and the other solid also the officers had a BRONZE badge this regment was absorbed into the Tank Corps in 1918 so we have TWO GILT AND ONE VOIDED AND OFFICERS BRONZE (1918)

Many thanks for the information. It's strange that I have never seen a Brass/Gilt King Edwards Horse, only the White Metal. The 2nd King Edwards Horse I have only seen in Brass/Gilt and never in White Metal. Odd.

The w/m badges are 1960s onwards fakes and are reknowned as such - so infamous that they even get a mention in K&K Vol 2 chapter on restrikes which I believe was written by Laurie Archer. Any badge in white metal is a fake and ebay is full of them.

This is the slightly rarer version known as the 'spikey crown' due to the small points at the base of the crown. Shame it's been so polished.

I acquired one in the early 1960's and it was brass. Unfortunately I gave it to the father of an original member of the unit in 1966.

You're right - the King's Colonials badge you have, is genuine.
A quick rule of thumb, is that the 'genuine badge is voided on each side of the crown.
Also in respect of the 'white metal' badges - they're all restrikes according to Kipling & King.
I have several variations of these badges - including the 'Spiky Crown' and various collar badges, which I hope to upload in the near future.

There are two types of spellings for this badge,"Adsumas" and "Ausumas" both in gilding metal never white metal which are restrikes.

There was an article on this regiment and its insignia in the Military Historical Society Bulletin of February 1967.

The badges are described and illustrated ( see attached- the origial picture was not too brilliant and so the scan is rather poor )

Ironically no mention is made of the metal of which the badges were made.

This is my 2nd KEH badge. It is a really nice 'dished' badge with lovely period toning. There is a tiny nick the bottom scroll but I am happy with it. I have been after one for ages and finally found one I liked. The edge of the slider is slightly rough but I have a 7th Hussars badge with provenance which is identical so that does not put me off.
