Frock not Familiar to me
Hello Everyone
I was recently going through some auction lots i won (mixed militaria lots) and i came across the Frock below. I don't intend on keeping it in my collection as i don't believe it fits in with my theme. Can anyone help me with a proper identification and valuation. Once done i'll offer it on the forum before any other online auction. I should add all but one button is Victorian crown one shoulder strap has a kings crown button. http://s228.photobucket.com/user/cen...avalry%20Frock Cheers Chris |

Hi Chris
I'm probably on totally the wrong track here but could it possibly have a NWMP / RNWMP connection? I know the buttons are not correct and I don't suppose it would have a "WD" label. Just a thought! David Last edited by davidwyke; 03-01-16 at 09:02 PM. |

I think it may be a 'field' tunic or Kersy (excuse spelling) for one of the mounted units, hence the hooks to mount the chain shoulder scales on. I'm proberly wrong tho.

Didn't notice the hooks, that kind of rules out RNWMP also. Obviously a cavalry frock of some kind so the buttons are probably wrong anyway as Cav Regts wore regimental buttons.

Thanks for the input gents. Through some additional research I've been able to determine that this style of jacket was worn in the Zululand and Egypt campaigns by the cavalry regiments and that officer's/ssm's would additionally wear the chain epaulets on their uniforms.
I found 3 examples online but all are in collections and none for sale so i'm still searching for a valuation before i post it for sale. For being in a box of "miscellaneous militaria" i'm quite happy with it. Cheers Chris |

The Crowns to the sleeves do not look like proper rank badges more akin to Queen Victoria Jubilee souveniers. Those long pins would wreak havoc on the poor soldier's forearms!

the pin is actually tucked between the red serge and the lining doesn't poke through at all.

Discussion on other forums suggested RCMP, one reason being the collar tabs, but they are square rather than pointed at the outer ends, and RCMP I was working with said that they didn't think it it was RCMP. It was "decided" that it was to a Dragoon Guards regiment (I think 4 RIDG was the favoured opinion) The buttons appear to be the original, Victorian crowned GS ones. |

That's very helpful indeed. I don't think the frock i have has ever been issued as its in really nice condition which may be why the collars were never sewn on. That would also explain why the crown aren't "of issue style" Finding period photo's showing this frock in wear is proving to be quite difficult. Cheers Chris |
