Default Small Calgary Regt. title

Hi,

I recently bought this nice Calgary regiment title, but when comparing it to some examples I already have it is a lot smaller.

Could this be an early war type or just a makers variation ?

regards,

Albert

Those insignia are British made according to the slant of the letters and the backing. I don't know what date, but I would guess that it is not early war by that I mean 1939-41.

The title you posted in your first picture matches one in my own collection. Nothing wrong with it. I would date it to be about mid war.

The title on the top of your second picture looks to be a starch back variation, they date from very late war. 1945.

Thank for the replies,

I take it there is no significance to the smaller size of this title just a variation ?

regards,

Albert.

Hi Albert, No, there is no real significance to the size. The first pattern titles were quite large.

Hi Bill

Does this mean that this smaller title is a later pattern ?
When I compare it in size to the glueback or printed titles it is smaller ( see second picture)

Regards,

Albert.

Hi Albert, The first pattern shoulder titles and formation patches were worn until early 1943. (The larger pattern similar to your smaller example and the "hung" goat formation sign. In 1943 these were replaced by the Canadian Armoured Corps titles and the imposed diamond shape formation patch with the regt'l abbreviation embroidered on the patch. These remained in wear (being replaced by printed patterns) until the spring of 1945. So, your title likely dates to no earlier than the spring of 1945.

That is a nice collection, but shouldn't the number in the diamond patches be 14 for the Calgary regiment, 12 is the Three Rivers regiment if I am not mistaken.

Regarding the diamond shape patches, I understood from Bill's post that they were worn with the Canadian Armoured corps titles, but were they also worn with the Calgary regiment titles ?

Regards,

Albert.

Hi Albert, Short answer to your question is yes, the titles and 14 CTR / CAR patches were worn together, but not until late in the war. The Canandian army had a policy that allowed old insignia to be worn until used up/worn out.

Hi Bill.

Thanks, I ask this because I am putting a frame together with all the units that liberated my home town Ede in april 1945. The Calgary regiment played a big part in this.

As far as I can gather from in the info so far the small title was most likely to be worn (or also the glueback and printed).
The goat was no longer in use by this time and the diamond patches were most likely not worn anymore.

regards,

Albert.

Hi Albert, For April 1945 it would be correct to use the shoulder tilte and either a plain 1 CAB patch or the 14 CAB patch. The "hung" goat was gone in 1942.
