African Wildlife - The Big 5!
Elephant
Leopard Lion Rhinocerus, Rhinoseros, Rhinoceros, RHINO Missing a Kenyan charging buffalo, but chucked in an ostrich (?) and an imported tiger from India instead. Sincerely hope in the next 100 years they are all still roaming the African savannah (well not the tiger obviously) and not just an image on an old colonial cap badge. Cheers Mark |

Hi Mark,
Thanks for sharing these, wonderful badges and a joy to see a group like this, well done. I would love to find a silver/gilt or HM silver Rhino but no luck yet. Cheers, Roy.

Thanks for the comment Roy. The rhino is the only Sudanese badge I have and I was lucky enough to pick it up several years ago. I believe there are some serious Sudanese collectors on the Forum, but prices for colonial badges seem to be increasing of late. Anyway good luck in your search.

Hi Zob
A crested crane - jeepers! Thanks for putting me right. I must admit it actually looks absolutely nuthin' like an ostrich unless it's one that has been been on the Aitkens diet and has taken to wearing a fez. My badge references didn't mention what kind of bird it was and unfortunately that was as far as my African ornithological knowledge went. Do you know if it's the same bird on the Ugandan Police Service Battalion. Similar shape with a more detailed head crest, obviously on a lot bigger badge. Irish Good suggestion for a camel - which also reminds me that their is an antelope on the Somaliland Camel Corps Badge. All pretty expensive to get hold of though................ Cheers Mark |

SA General Service has an antelope on it too, probably easier to find than a hippo
An osterich is on the Kings Colonials British African badge

Yes, exactly the same bird (Golden Crested Crane) albeit, a much nicer design and hair cut where the Uganda Protectorate bird was concerned, although this did come after the earlier adoption by Northern Rhodesia. Perhaps, the Governor General who incidentally introduced both of these representations – decided to take a more pitiful approach the second time round. Regards, Zob. |

Thanks for the links Pinfrin - especially the Kenya Regiment. Very interesting read.
The Bengal Mounted Rifles is 45mm wide and 32mm high. Cheers Mark |

Zob,
Not being a bird specialist myself (oooeerrr don't tell the wife). Can you confirm for me that the Uganda Protectorate I have (pictured) is indeed a 'Golden Crested Crane' assuming I'm understanding you correct? And Mark you should start an album with those nice badges of your. I'm thinking of a small 'Colonial' album myself as I have a small group and a Rhino on the way Cheers, Roy.
