This looks like a nice original patch. I tend to be wary of these due to the multitude of fakes about.

Default CHINDIT PATCH

Just a little bit of further info, this was worn by an officer who may have been in one of the Engineer regiment's as the old sweat who passed it onto me was a Captain in the Madras Sappers & Miners.

Whether engineers would have been there (although do think that some form of engineers would have been) for someone more upto date with Chindit's may be able to confirm if my reasoning is correct.

Gentlemen,
Here is the last one I found, many years ago now, no studs on the reverse, though, there were originally, I think it would be very safe to assume that there were indeed engineers in the 3rd Indian Division.
Regards to you all

The Order of Battle for the Second Chindit Expedition (Operation Thursday) included the equivalent of an Engineer Regiment (2 Fd Coy RE, 54 Fd Coy RE, a mixed RE/RIE Fd Coy and 219 Fd Park Coy RE. In addition the was Blain Detachment (Bladet) described as "glider-borne commando engineers".

Thanks for adding your information to this thread Frank and Mike. I now own the Chindit patch originally posted by Brookies in this thread. I was a bit concerned at first when I saw the arrangement of the steps that the Chinte was standing on, as other examples that I had seen were directly beneath the feet.

There is also a similar example in Irv's Royal Marine album, I believe it has links to a Welch Regiment soldier.

Bear in mind that thousands of these were hand-embroidered in India 1944/45 so there will be myriad variations. Anecdotal evidence suggests that they were also worn by large numbers of unentitled soldiers who whilst through no fault of their own were working in the rear areas wanted to look like true jungle warriors whilst on leave.

Hello Jack,
A pleasure, as Mike says, there are just so many differing examples of these, my thoughts would be, just get a couple of good classic examples that you are happy with!
They are nice badges though, I've always liked them.
Kind regards Frank

Okay, I just did, so what sort of money are they at these days? there is a well known dealer, up, in my neck of the woods, who will charge around £1200 for a 1st pattern, £600 for a 2nd and £300 for a 3rd, what do you think?
Kind regards Frank
