SAS crossbelt badges
Please, I need info about the crossbelt badges used by 21 (TA), 22 and 23(TA) SAS. As far as I have data this item is used in No 1 dress.
I asume that that of the 21 SAS is the Mars and Minerva badge, but if you can confirm I will appreciate. Thanks in advance Pedro |

In the absence of any other posts I can add that at its meeting on 8th December 1959 the War Office Dress Committee under an agenda item headed "Pouch Badge 21st Special Air Service Regt TA" recorded;
"The Chairman displayed a sample of the original Artists Rifles pouch badge which 21st SAS wished to wear in a modified form. He said that now this badge was available for viewing it was possible to see more clearly the problem involved and understand the regiment's desire to perpetuate their origins. He noted that the sides of the scroll had been left out of the proposed design and it would be better had they been included. He therefore instructed the Committee's Secretary to approach the regiment to obtain their agreement to this suggestion and resubmit a satisfactory drawing for consideration". Presumably only 21st SAS would have been entitled to the Mars and Minerva as the other SAS regiments did not have origins in the Artists Rifles. I am interested to know more and see a picture of an example if anyone can help. Jon |

Crossbelt badges
Friends,
The earlier thread referred to has all the information I have. 22 and 23 do not wear crossbelts. They are not part of the Artists Rifles tradition as 21 is. If you check the home page of The Rifles, you can download their dress regulations and read all about the Rifles crossbelt and lanyard, which is the same as the old lanyard worn by 21 on their battledress, which was phased out in the early seventies. I can add that the modified 21 crossbelt badge was sold in the 21 PRI as a souvenir badge. Cheers, Johan Last edited by johanwiegman; 12-09-13 at 06:44 PM. |

This link to Arnhem Jim's site shows information on the official copies and the copies of the copies.
I have one, which has some features seen on the official copies and others seen on the copies of copies, so I could not say either way if good or bad, but it is probably bad. The lack of lines behind the 21st SAS part at the top is a good sign, but the poor detail at the base is a bad sign. http://arnhemjim.blogspot.co.uk/2011_06_01_archive.html
