United Provinces Horse
Quite an unusual one I feel? Nice little 'Gaunt' tablet to the reverse. I've found this reference online from Peter. I trust he won't mind me using it?
The United Provinces Horse was an Auxilliary Force India unit. These were part time volunteers, British or Anglo-Indian who formed the rough equivalent of the British Territorial Force. Many were emplyed by British firms and the British-Indian government. For example, the AFI had many 'railway battalions' made up of employees of the various state railways. The Ghazipur Light Horse, formed on 7th January 1887 from the Ghazipur Volunteer Rifle Corps and the Oudh Light Horse formed on 10th June 1887 from the Oudh Volunteer Rifle Corps, were all amalgamated and became the United Provinces Light Horse on the 1st April 1904. On 1st April 1909 the unit designation changed to 1st United Provinces Horse and then 7th (Southern Regiment) United Provinces Horse on 1st April 1917. Unit became the United Provinces Horse (Southern Regiment) on 1st October 1920. So, quite an unusual badge, given the short tenure of the unit under that name! Peter
