Default Artillery Grenade

This grenade has no motto. It is not worn off, it was never there. Can anyone identify this badge? Thanks.

Hi
Could it be Territorial Artillery? They don't have the Ubique honnor.

Could also be Militia Arty, as worn on officer's SD - Litchfield (in his Booklet on Gunner Collars, 2002)) says "possibly 1902-08. Identification as Militia has not been confirmed and is speculative".
Another suggestion is for Royal Malta Arty - before wearing "MALTA" on the scroll.

No, not for Royal Malta Artillery.
Previous to introduction of the MALTA scroll OSD grenade, officers wore a very similar one introduced circa 1904 without any scroll below.
This same enquiry was brought up by my good friend and mentor, the Late Norman Litchfield, and no record was ever found of any Maltese connection to this collar badge. The empty scroll does tend to point to a territorial or militia regiment, or possibly being a 'general issue'.

Hi guys,
Look closed on the scroll. I see the faded remains of an N in the middle and some other letter to the right.
I say that it's a CANADA scroll, well worn. But the the grenade is intact!

It would be VERY difficult to remove the letters and leave the seeding intact.
Apart from that, the "N" could also be an "A" suggesting a Honourable Artillery Company collar badge.

Thomas

Thanks for all your thoughts. There is no lettering on the bottom scroll. There is a slight pebble which is undisturbed.

Default Grenade badges

I too have one of these and consider it quite rare. I've also wondered if I will ever see a gun badge with the upper scroll blank, in line with the Territorial laurel spray on badge and collar which of course are quite common both in OSD and ORs.

The only reference that I know of or come across is as 'revdougal' has already posted.

Litchfield "possible identification as Militia 1902-1908 has not been confirmed and is speculative".

About a month ago there was a soldier's RA full size badge with a blank upper scroll on one of the reputable dealer's websites. From the front it looked as if it had been made that way i.e. it had not been "rubbed down; and from the rear there was no trace of any imprint of script. It sat there for about 3 weeks, before going for around £80. I am unaware of such a badge's background. Over to you, 54 Bty!

I have no idea about it either, but I will post an image of mine later. It has the 1902 position lugs so it looks as though it is possible that it could go with the blank scroll collar badge and a possible RA Militia connection.

This badge is in my collection. The top scroll is blank. It has a slighly pebbled finish to the scroll.

From the images it looks like a cast badge with the crown and scroll added.
