Their war diaries don't cover a great deal of the early period either.

There are a couple of references but these are fairly specialized and relate in particular to postal markings -
Bob Emery, Australian Imperial Forces Postal History 1914-1918, published by author, 1984.
Edward B. Proud, History of the Australian Military Postal Services 1914-1950, published by author, 1991.

Because of mail difficulties for the troops in the Middle East the Aust Govt offered a postal unit on 18 August 1915, it being accepted by the British Govt on 24 August 1915 and despatched in December [Report upon the Department of Defence, Part I, to July 1917]. 3 officers and 40 ORs drawn from employees of the PMG [MO 589/1915 of 5.10.1915: Approval for the raising of a Army Base Field Post Office. MO 659/1915 of 2.11.1915: Army Base Field Post Office redesignated Base Post Office].

AIF Order 107 dated 8.3.1916: Formation of Aust Army Postal Corps.
