Default Oldham Local Militia - Interesting Backmark, Any Ideas Gents?

Hi Chaps,

Snowed in again up here in the Rockies, so a good day to catch up on some cataloging of recent additions to my Militia Button collection.

This gild beauty is a lovely Oldham (Lancashire) Local Militia example. The backmark is a crown over a wreath, anyone seen this before and have any ideas of who this mark belonged too?

Cheerio,

Roy

Hi Roy,
A lovely Button. I’m afraid I cannot help with the backmark but attached link may be of interest, if you scroll down to Oldham LM you’ll see a description and sketch of your button. It covers other Buttons and Insignia to most of the Lancs LM .
There are records of returns for the OLM up to 1826.

Hello Roy

Another lovely button for your collection.

I have no documentary evidence but from a study of backmarks I believe the crown and wreath device was used by Hammond, Turner & Dickinson in the period 1800-1820. During this same period they also used their own name as a backmark, sometimes with a crown, sometimes without but the backmark you have also appears to have been theirs during this time. As with most backmarks details, there appears to be no specific reason for the use of different marks over a broadly similar time period.

The same crown and wreath device also appears to have been used by the same firm some years later in its existence when it was known as Hammond, Turner & Sons.

Hi Paul and Roger,

Thank you kindly gents for all of the extra information, a great help. Such details really help to put a little perspective on these treasures.

I will update my notes on this example.

Many thanks indeed.

Cheers,

Roy
