QVC Suffolk all brass.
Hi
Just appeared on Endici's eBay listing is an all brass Queen Victorian Crown cap badge, with 2 lugs, to the Suffolks. Does anyone have any information on what this badge is and when, if ever, it was worn ? I am a regular buyer from this seller and am always pleased with the badges I recieve, most of which, I believe come from Bosley. Parabellum. |

I cant answer your question but its clearly an original badge.
Unlike his Lancashire Volunteers b/b Cap Badge, which is a blatant fake. regards

That's what I thought, but being made in brass has threw me off. I don't know enough about the regiment to say with certainty that a brass one with this crown was ever worn.
It certainly looks of the period and it's the first one I've seen. Thank you for you comments |

If it's genuine … I can only think "Band" (?)

I cannot see the badge on the website so I can't comment directly. But two points may illuminate the matter.
Firstly I have a 6VB KLR badge all in GM BUT it certainly appears to have some age (and I think genuine) and, more telling, it is from the same (unmarked Firmin) die as the more usual WM. (The third one here is also WM but from a different die.) Secondly, there was an all GM Suffolk Regt badge produced in 1916. There are two variants (at least I would guess). One has a regular 'Tudor' King's crown, but another version has an Imperial (flat topped) crown - which i have seen described as Victorian. (I'm sorry but I don't have illustrations at hand). Never say never ! |

I was informed many years ago by a very knowledgeable collector, now long dead, that several units were issued with bronzed-brass badges for wear on the slouch hats in the 2nd Boer War. I would say that the Suffolks badge started out as one of them.

Thanks Jeff, I have to admit that I'm not sure what metal that is - it may be a fluke of lighting !
Hoot, that's a very interesting idea - I'd love to find a reference for that. It might just relate to a WO order of 1901. It begs the question as to what else would they have apart from silver / WM ????? 'Also decided that Volunteers may wear the Territorial Badges in white metal & silver but without honours in the case of those badges which have honours attached'.[1] [1] TNA WO 359/10, 306, Ref V / 1/17 221, 22.5.1901. |

If you let him know its a fake, i'm sure he will remove it from his listings. He's an honest seller.
