Both badges relate to tours of India by the then Prince of Wales, later king George Vth. The second, 1911/12, badge is for the Delhi Durbar and tour of India.

I forgot to add, superb badges.

They are superb badges. I’d only ever seen one of them before and I imagine that they must be quite rare. Is it known what item of dress they were worn upon? They seem an odd shape for headdress.

They were possibly worn on both civilian and military clothing. I imagine that they were rather like back stage passes or enclosure admission badges at Ascot, only of a more select nature and gave access to the Royal encampment. A sort of high end security pass.

Either that, or they were issued as a distinguishing badge by those officers, security staff, caterers, bearers, etc. who were employed in the camp. They probably had lesser quality badges for the bearers and sweepers.

All good and interesting theories, but I’d really like to know for sure. I imagine that there might be photos somewhere of them in use. A lot of money must have been spent procuring them so I think it’s unconscionable for them to have been hidden away.
