Default Help identifying Victorian RMLI badge

Hello, I recently purchased a group which included a RMLI jacket and accouterment, including this badge. I am interested to confirm what time period this is from. The badge has the Moto "Honi soit mal y pense". Thank you for your help. David

Its a generic Victorian Officers Pouch Belt Plate, worn by those units that didnt have their own unique pattern. Not RMLI

As its in gilt it would be part of the regular army.

Date is probably between 1880 and 1900 period if I was to hazard a guess.

regards

Thank you manchesters, that is very helpful. This man was a Royal Naval surgeon who was stationed with the RMLI between 1857-1869. The group came with his jacket which has RMLI buttons, and his officers pouch belt. From a photo of the man from c.1860 it looks like the one he's wearing in the photo. Any reason to think this badge would not be from that period?

Thx
David

David,

That all fits and the date can definately be earlier to that period. Very hard to date in isolation.

regards

Would love to see photos of the other items. I’m pretty certain that surgeons wore this belt plate and will really and find a photo of it in use

1664, a few more pics. Please let me know if you have any questions. The subject here was a Royal Naval surgeon during the Syria campaign (1840), the Crimea, and Baltic campaigns. Served as surgeon to the Royal Marines at Portsmouth from 1857, retired in 1870.

The uniform uniform is named and has RMLI buttons, but is obviously not the same exact uniform in the photo. Photo is most likely c.1859-61.

Meet Dr IR Burke, RMLI, he is shown wearing the tunic introduced in 1868, whereas your image is the 1856 pattern tunic. The cross belt badge is correct and it is a lovely set but note the difference in lace on the cuff and collar in this photo compared to your tunic, yours is a field officers pattern lace but with a single star as a rank badge so is for a Major. Did you get his medals as well?
