Default East Surrey with serif font

Any thoughts on these? Die cast reverse, solid crown and a EAST SURREY - font with 'serifs'

Alarmingly common so fake, restrike or genuine?

I’m certain they’re fine, WW1 vintage I suspect.

Found with hairpin slider and braze hole. Neither common traits for fakes.

East Surrey’s had a lot of Battalions in WW1.

Edit: to avoid repetition, same die / badge discussed here….

Hi Alan,

I used to have one of these and considered it a nice original badge (IMHO).

Kind Regards,

Pete

Alas I fear they are being restruck then. For eaxample

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/115588075...k9SR8CTi-jnYg7

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/295704121...Bk9SR-SQyujnYg

Far too many on ebay from well known sellers of fakes.

I think I need to find one with brasing holes and hairpin slider.

The badge in the first link is totally different? It’s the Marsh fake die.

Second sold by Uncle Ho is same die as OP and original. Uncle Ho appears to sell job lots from auctions. You will see some good and plenty bad in his current listings.

As it's difficult to see in a direct rear photo, here is an oblique view of a similar badge to that in the OP illustrating the hairpin slider and two sweat holes.

The same as one of several badges I could have had a few years back, one was RASC but all seemed to be of very poor quality.

I agree they won't win any awards as the badge manufacturers finest. Here's another mishmash. A similar badge was previously discussed on here and agreed in all probability to be a wartime expedient using an obsolete QVC die.

Did anyone else see this lot on ebay some months ago? Seller had several multiple lots which, for me, raised some interesting points on several questionable badges. I saved photos of all his lots and wish I'd asked him where he'd got them all. It looks like he'd bought up all the leftovers from an old badge factory. Regardless, here are the pics of his East Surrey lot. Let me know if I should put up the photos of his other lots. Photos used for educational purposes only (the disclaimer historic and archaeological sites use when using other people's pics without specific permission ) Mike

I think that would be incredibly useful. Might be worth starting a new thread?

Absolutely no idea, sorry. I saw the listings, thought hmmm... they're all very interesting. I bought one lot that was of particular interest to me, and copied the photos from his other listings in the hope of giving it some further investigation one day. Then forgot all about it until I saw Alan's post about the East Surrey serif font badge. If the admins are happy with me running a thread built almost entirely on photos lifted from ebay, I'm happy to give it a go. Mike
