Hi, just bought a board of 1st Army badges and cloth which has raised one or two queries. Are these badges 1st Corps artillery? if they are what if anything did 2nd Corps wear?

The 2nd Cananadian Corps Artilery was a red zig-zag on a blue lozange. As far as I know there was no RCA on a blue lozange.

There is some controversy about the 1 Cdn Corps RCA patch. It was not likely approved or worn. No photo evidence of it in use has been discovered.
The zig zag (Thunderbolt) patch for 1 Cdn Corps should be the other way around. The "zag" should point up at the ends.

Hi Mike, Clarification. There was only a First Canadian Army AGRA. I don't know where the 2nd comes in? Unless that is a confusion with 1 Cdn Corps AGRA and 2 Cdn Corps AGRA. Attached is the sketch of the 2 Cdn Corps AGRA formation patch.
Hi Jo, The controversy is the existence of the 1 Cdn Corps RCA patch. (Not the zig zag ptn, the abbreviated ptn). No record of approval or evidence of the patch in actual wear.

Bill,if you have the Falconer book,go to pages 359-360-361,there are some explanations on the 1st and 2nd AGRA. I have some difficulty sorting out the informations, maybe you will have a better understanding of what Falconer wrote.
He wrote that 1st AGRA was for 1st Corps and that 2nd AGRA was for 2nd Corps to be under command of 1st Canadian Army. Jo

Hi Jo, I stand corrected. There were two First Canadian Army AGRA. They were two groupings, in the Canadian army, consisting of medium regiments and a field regiment. (2 Army Group had a HAA regiment as well.) I Army Group RA served with 1 Cdn Corps in Italy and later transferred to NW Europe. As you indicated, they both wore the First Cdn Army AGRA patches.
In Italy, there was a bit of an anomaly, as First Cdn Army 1 AGRA was under command of 1 Cdn Corps. But, these units were tactical groupings, shuffled around as needed. They were army assests, but not strictly reserved for army control. After Operation Goldflake in early 1945, both groups were back under command of First Canadian Army, and were used as need required, not as assets of a particular corps.
