Default 3 types of Firmin Motto in A/A

Hi All

I have found a third type of "Firmin London" motto?

1. [Left] First Firmin type (Going back to QVC)
2. [Middle] Second Firmin type (started post WW2?)
3. [Right] Third Firmin type (looks like the modern London Badge & Button Co Ltd Motto)

* Ignore the type reference in the pics (unrelated)

Hi Griff,

The first badge is 1960's and the second is 1990's.

The mark on the third badge is one I have not encountered before.

Can you carry out/answer the following:

1. Can you post an image of reverse of the third badge 'straight on' please.

2. Also. do you have any dial calipers to enable a measurements of the marking to be made down to around 0.05mm?

3. Where did you get the third badge from?

Regards

Chris

Hi Griff,

When you get the badge can you get back to me. The mark is certainly not one that I have seen before and the slider looks like a new one on me too but would need to see it 'straight on'.

Ask the person who you are getting it from where they got it from and lets see if we can track down its point of origin.

While this is a common badge to acquire I would like to know the source of this marking and hence the badges in case it turns up on 'rarer' items.

Regards

Chris

By the way.

Even by eye the size of 'FIRMIN' looks a lot smaller than 'LONDON'.

Yes, I want to know much, much more about this badge and its origin.

Chris

Ok, this one is a bit strange as its also a "London Badge & Button Co Ltd" pattern type (see below). Is this a pattern "approved" (QRL??) and Firmin made their version of it? BTW I have an unmarked white metal in this pattern that could be Firmin or LBBCoLtd now?

Hi Griff,

As I know the FIRMIN made the QLR and theirs was made of very thin aluminium sheet. LB&B may also have won a contract to supply to.

I will try and find out where this guy got it from.... but I cant promise anything.

To be honest, my gut feeling is that its a duffer..... compared to the LBBCoLtd its very poor looking and the slider end does not look "cut" like a Firmin?

Hi Griff,

The mark looks very dodgy and I really want to know where its coming from - person and place. I'm surprised that it is on a common badge like this though but that could be deliberate to 'pave the way' for its use on more exotic items.

When you find out more info please get back to me.

In the meantime I will be looking out for it as well.

Regards

Chris

Chris

The pics below show marked differences

The source is being questioned at the moment, I am "dancing with the devil" with this dealer..... but I am interested in what he has at the moment so I am treading softly

OK Griff,

Don't spook him - just ask in passing if he can remember where he got it from.

The bottom two marks are one and the same and are good from the 1960's.

Regards

Chris

Is there a genuinly different "Firmin London" mark....... than the examples I have shown? Both off "good" mottoes BTW.

Looking at the Makers Mark section.... there does not appear to be anything different to the good ones I have shown?

Hi Griff,

The only other that I know of is:

'FIRMIN. LONDON'

Note the position of the full stop hard up on the 'N' followed by a space and then the word 'LONDON'.

This was used in the 1990's.

Regards

Chris
