Default Vintage of this 16th Canadian Light Horse Badge?

Anyone know whether this is a CEF or militia period badge?
Thanks, Ian.

Default Vintage of 16th Light Horse badge?

A quote from "The Concise Lineages of The Canadian Army 1855 Date" by Charles H. Stewart. "The regiment was raised July 3,1905 as the 16th Mounted Rifles. It was redesignated The 16th Light Horse Oct 1, 1908,The 16th Canadian Light Horse Mar.15th 1920. The unit amalgamated with The Saskatchewan Mounted Rifles Dec,15th 1936 with the designation as the 16th/22nd Saskatchewan Horse" The date quoted in Mazeas "Insignes Canadiens 1920-1950" is "G.O.41/1928" I hope that this helps you. I have found Stewarts book very helpful in the past,it is long out of print, and impossible to obtain as far as I know.

Thanks for the info gents. Must expand my library but badge reference books, especially CEF, are scarce and expensive! I do have Mazeas 1920-1950 and saw the badge referenced in there as 1928. However, one of the two CEF-era patterns is the same - but maybe not the same materials?
Cheers, Ian.

Hi Ian, Having both the pre-1914 Mazeas book and the 1920-1950 Mazeas book at hand, the illustrations for the 16 Light Horse badge differ in many details. If the drawings are true, the badge that you have shown is more consistent with the post war pattern. The pre-1914 book does not indicate the badge is bi-metal, and neither does the post war Mazeas. My understanding was that the 16th wore their militia badge in WW1. Cross lists the bi-metal badge as an officer's pattern.

The latter pattern (1920s) and a beaut. They did a much better job on the 'cariboose' for the 2nd type, even if it still has an extra antler sticking out of its neck. The first pattern animal was a real committee job that doesn't match anything on God's green planet, being 1/3 moose, 1/3 caribou and 1/3 reindeer

I'm jealous -- I shall now Photoshop in a bunch of verdigris and bend the antlers just to make myself feel better

Thanks again for the additional info, gents. It is one of my favorites, even though I mainly collect CEF badges.

David - you are a true artist!

Cheers, Ian.
