Just out of interest, here is an image of J. R. Gaunt's Warstone Parade Works (listed above) as taken from a letter heading of theirs, dated May 1936:

Not wishing to shoot off at a tangent here, but just to touch on Ticker's passing comment about Mrs. Woodward: it appears that she was born, Florence Emily Garbett, at Birmingham, in 1871, and married Mr. Woodward in 1895 (also Birmingham).
In the 1901 census they are living at 35 Albion Street, Birmingham (Parish of St. Paul) with a son aged four, and a daughter aged one. They're alright for a few bob, as they have a servant living with them at that time (Amy Lindsay). William Frederick Woodward, appears to have been born Birmingham, 1876, and, unsurprisingly, is recorded in the 1901 census as being a 'Metal Goods Manufacturer' (see below). Brilliant, new evidence, great research.
I fully endorse the suggestion of Thomas (Fougasse) that Martin publish his findings. Julian |

Feedback about Lists of Contracts for “Badges, Metal”, 1914-1919
Very many thanks for all the positive feedback Gents - it’s gratifying to know some members have found things of interest, and it does make all the effort worthwhile. I’m not sure that this material would be worthy of publication by the Military Historical Society as it is, after all it is essentially just a list of company names and addresses, and besides I thought if it was going to be appreciated anywhere it would be here on the Forum. I will actually post up the information from the trade directories I’ve looked at about these same companies in due course, as this should tell us a bit more about what they were making. If I can ever follow any of this up at Kew then there might well be room for an article in the MHS Bulletin, but sadly that will have to wait for another day methinks. Anyway, hopefully I will be able to post up a list of the trade directory entries soon, which should complement the composite list from the Labour Gazette. Thank you again for all the postings.
Best regards Martin

I'm ashamed to say I'd missed this wonderful piece of work by Ticker up until today, and a big thanks to badger123 for bringing it to my attention.
Where is Ticker these days ? One name which is missing from the list is F.Narborough which comes as a surprise, or does it ? Can it be safe to say that their economy badge for the South Wales Borderers can now be considered dubious and that this company were not involved in badge manufacturing during WW1? |
