Default Veined South of Ireland Yeomanry badge

Any South of Ireland Yeomanry badge which I've previously encountered has had an unveined leaf and smooth stalk, but I recently found one which was veined (examples of both attached for comparison). The design is closer to that of the South Irish Horse badge, which succeeded the SIY, with the veined leaf, which makes me think this may have been a later/ transitional badge. Although it's quite likely to be a maker's variation, the lugs don't seem to have as much age as the commonly encountered unveined leaf and smooth stalk badge. Has anyone else encountered one of these veined SIY badges before?

Default South Ireland Yeomanry

Hi Kyle

Yes the veined variation does exist.

I’ve not actually handled one but see the attached old photo from someone’s collection.

It’s a rare item.

Sorry I don’t have any other information.

Regards

Bob

Dear Bob,

Thank you very much for the reply. Interestingly, the stalk on the veined badge in your picture faces right, whilst mine faces left, suggesting these were produced in L/R collar pairs. Unless the badge in your photo is another variation?

Kind regards,
Kyle

Very nice badge.

I would suspect the stalk has been bent the opposite way rather than a different die.
