Default 97th Foot (Ulster) first pattern shako badge

Thought would share this gem, which i found today.

Just from the photographs, I would have thought is an 1878 to 1881 pattern helmet plate worn in Full Dress upon the cloth helmet, not a shako.

Indeed, you encounter the odd one in South Africa, they had been out on Foreign Service in the Colony of Natal whilst the Laing's Nek business was going on during the Transvaal War.
