Default 15 Para beret with "incorrect orientated" tartan patch

Here's a photo of a 15 Para beret in my collection with the tartan badge background in the incorrect orientation. I've had it a number of years and although I had not been able to find any photos of similarly orientated backgrounds in use, (with the exception of the aforementioned Kelvinside Academy CCF), I had assumed that there may have been a certain amount of latitude by WO's/units or time period as to it being positioned in the correct orientation. The beret has no beret bow to the rear which also used to be a big 'no no' in the 80's but I have a beret from a regular Para Bn that dates from the 70's without a bow - although not as noticeable a a beret badge background but showing some degree of latitude of the times?

Harry, that is a beautiful beret! My thought is that it is a cadet beret with that orientation. I cannot see the 15th allowing a trooper to wear the backing incorrectly.

I have not been involved with the CCF but thought that all Para Regt affiliated cadet units wore the regimental cap badge on a black beret - maroon berets being only for regular and TA units. I stand to be corrected on that as it is something I have not come across before. The Kelvinside Academy CCF webpage were I had seen the incorrectly orientated background showed it being worn on a black beret as illustrated by your post #7.
There must have been the odd occasion were the background was worn incorrectly by members of the battalion as shown in the photo in post #10. The wearing of DPM Para Smocks would date this photo to post early 80's.

OK, I stand corrected. Was not aware that cadets did not wear a maroon beret. Always appreciate being corrected, so thank you for that.

Terry

I have seen Adult CFV's wearing maroon berets and badges but they always had the parachute wings to match as they were ex-Regulars or ex-Reservists.
The cadets have always wore the black ones even as far back as the 1950s.
