RE Special Service Formation Sign
Has anyone seen one like this before please?
The backing is vintage looking, but the 'S.S.' appears to have been drawn on! Is it a rara avis, or has someone been cutting a piece off an old badge before getting creative with a felt tip pen? Graham

Letters look stamped on to me, but I'm not familiar with the patch.
RE collectors will be more helpful. Terry |

This remains a mystery patch - various theories suggest RE personnel attached for Special Service. One suggestion suggests dates from time of Independent Companies circa April 1940. However, no definitive evidence apart from suggestive RE Colours. The patch displayed may be a blank ready for blue over embroidery of letters as found in other examples. One theory even suggests it is Australian Sanitary Sections - something I know nothing about ...
Interesting that the blank in post 1 is Serif, generally found Sans Serif as below All the best Mike |

Thanks Mike - useful to see the old thread
I don't think the two titles in the old thread are related given colours etc - but it shows the SS badge question has been around for a while. Major Waring simply records the 'SS' badge (866 in his first catalogue) as 'Special Service'. I greatly admire his pamphlets and ground-breaking research. His pamphlets are available through the Military Heraldry Society. https://militaryheraldrysociety.com/join.html Last edited by Mike B; 15-01-24 at 12:58 PM. |
