Welsh Guards

Chaps, i'm after a favour. I have two regimental numbers i would like checking if possible. 1932 and 848535, these numbers are on the sliders of two Welsh Guards leeks.

Hi Andy,

A cursory check of WW1 medal cards found no WG who served in WW1 and were sent overseas under those numbers.

is supposed to have the numbers of all who served in WW1 and I can't find the number there either. Beware, there are about 75 pages and I went through it three times - amazing what CV19 lock-in can do! The book is well worth the read.

Interestingly, WO329 shows 1930 Guardsman Aneurin Williams 1st WG and then 1933 Guardsman Thomas B Daniel 1st WG, no 1931 or 1932.

848535 would seem odd for that regiment, rather to high prior to 1920 and then does not fit into the regiments block from 2730001

Presumably transferred from the RA, eg number 848788 transferred to WG from RA in 1936, died in October 1945 after wounded in Italy serving with 3WG, buried in UK.

Very large numbers of specifically anti-aircraft artillery, unneeded because of Increasing allied air superiority were compulsorily transferred to that voracious beast, the infantry reinforcement depot. He was probably one of them. From D-Day onwards the British Army never had enough infantry to meet the constant demand for battle casualty replacements.

Afternote: apologies, I missed the 1936 reference.

No, the casualty I mentioned is a RA man who transferred to WG in 1936, just he has a number "close" to your man's.

That's what I was thinking, a post D-Day transfer to infantry, interestingly the "example" transferee was a 1936 transfer, I was expecting him to be a 1944/45 one.
