Default The Cheshire Regiment K&K 1987 WM

Hi all,

This one caught me a little by surprise. A Cheshire Regiment post-WW1 star pattern cap badge in white metal with strand short stout tabs mounted on a horizontal plate to the rear. Normal size cap badge (44m across the points) but curious not in BM and not OSD. It is die cast with a voided centre. There is a small rubbed patch on the acorn back to a brass base metal.

Think I will let the Forum advise me as to what I have here. Looks too well made for a copy.

Anyway advice sought, Mercian front and centre please, cheers Dean.

Hello Dean, Most people think this badge was first introduced after 1923, in fact it was first introduced in 1888 as a officers badge, the star in silver plate the remainder in gilt with a green enamel centre. This badge was also worn by Volunteer officers in all silver with the green enamel centre. In 1898 the star badge with Cheshire on a scroll replaced it, but it was not worn until 1900. As the one in the picture has no green enamel centre I don't think it is of the right quality for a officers badge.

Thanks Mercian - will push it to the back of my collection for now - have seen the early ones and agree not of Officers quality. I wondered if others had seen such a fitting, there is a certain industrial finish to it. Cheers Dean.

Thanks again Mercian.

The fitting on your badge is indeed similar. I looked through your wonderful Cheshire album as my starting point to this thread. I still think it is an original badge with a very purposeful set of tabs like this.

Shall do some more research, cheers Dean.

Thanks for the nice remark about my album. I the badge was after 1923 it would not be all white metal as you know the volunteers had gone by then.
As an earlier issue it would have been officers or warrant officers quality, other ranks wore a collar badge. If you find any info on it let me know.

Thanks again Mercian.

Like you I had considered the fact that it would not be a VB version given the date range.

I am just trawling through some reference materials and see what I have to share.

Cheers Dean
