More excellent photos here including badges that are clearly polished https://www.pinterest.co.uk/davidyab...evon-yeomanry/
This photo has 2 bz alongside one w/m or very polished brass . 1915 tunic pockets in view. |

White metal? badges in No1 dress - note no collars are being worn.

Early in the Great War an order was issued for all units to dull their badges. When tin hats were subsequently issued this order was rescinded and units which had bronzed badges in 1914 were given the ‘order to polish’ their badges.
That information was given to Keith Hook in the 1950s when he began collecting Yeomanry seriously by Old Comrades from different several Yeomanry who were there in WW1. In many cases Keith was also given or bought their badges. I would surmise the polished badges in that photo are a direct result of this practice. |

If you go to the larger photo you can see that the majority are unpolished bronze but 2 or 3 are not so I suspect that they may be w/m and being worn in lieu of the correct bronzed ones.

There’s a piece which covers Yeomanry badges worn at the 1911 Coronation by R J Smith & R G Harris the badges pictured are Keith Hook’s collection. The R1DY is listed in WM and for officers silver embroidered blue. |

The WM badges are only found on tangs which would get broken in short order removing from the cap to clean.. I’ve seen just 2 WM examples in my entire life v’s the numerous GM (looped & slidered) examples. Last edited by Luke H; 12-02-23 at 04:27 PM. |

I think this is useful thread as the variety of photos in it are all showing the same design of badge with the same proportion of the lion and crown. It does enable us to rule out the many fakes and interlopers.
The crown is proportionally quite large compared to the lion in the photos. |

I agree a useful thread.
It may be worth scooping up several referenced R1DY threads and merging if not too difficult? May I suggest: https://www.britishbadgeforum.com/fo...ad.php?t=64729 https://www.britishbadgeforum.com/fo...ad.php?t=56758 https://www.britishbadgeforum.com/fo...ad.php?t=46173 (shows OSD badge) Testament I think to the forum that so much light has been shed on what was a particularly arcane badge a decade ago. Edit: many thanks Alan, great having a definitive R1DY thread! Last edited by Luke H; 12-02-23 at 06:18 PM. |

Do people think that the conclusion of this thread is that there are three likely OR's cap badges, all of a similar strike.
White metal Bronze (also a polished down to GM from bronze, as per Keith Hook's notes) Gilding metal. All with loops, or are there slider variants,? Chris |

Hi everyone,
Well there is definitely a slider version of the gilding metal OR's badge. I believe I have shown these before. They have been in my collection for a good number of years and came together. The officers badge with blade fittings is gilding metal, not bronzed! Maybe polished down, but I doubt it, looking at the reverse. I would be interested in people's thoughts on these. Andy |

When the ACD took over issuing badges in 1916 I would expect siiders to be used. The IWM has the s/p card for the shoulder titles in their collection but not the cap badge.
