South Lancashire Regiment (Prince of Wales’s Volunteers) [Small]
Hi Guys,
Does anyone have any information on the physical existence of the A/A version of the South Lancashire Regiment (Prince of Wales’s Volunteers) [Small] cap badge? An entry was noted in Bosley's auction house for a sale on WEDNESDAY 30th JANUARY 2008 under lot: 107 South Lancashire Regiment anodised beret badge. Did anyone here purchase this item. Hi Mike, Can you elaborate some? Documentation, Images, maker, slider, loops, etc. Regards Chris |

South Lancs. Rgt. anodised beret badge.
Good evening.
Lot 107: Smith & Wright Ltd. Slider. GC. Sold for GBP605 plus commission and VAT. Say GBP711.66. (And, of course, given the way the bidding system operates at Bosleys` Postal Auctions the underbidder must have been GBP550, so the successful bidder may well have offered far more than GBP605. Utter madness.) Given that sum, I struggle to think of many members of this Forum who would be likely to have purchased the item. Maybe I will be proved wrong. As the item is illustrated (against a 1cm. grid) in my copy of the Catalogue I suggest you might call that nice Mr Bosley, or Mr Pass, and ask them to send you a picture. They`re always most obliging whenever I ask. Enjoy. ST. Last edited by Silver Tourist; 21-12-11 at 09:41 PM. Reason: Futher information added. |

South Lancs. Rgt. anodised beret badge.
Good evening, again.
The estimate was GBP25-40. GBP605, an awful amount of money? No, it is what one collector thought it was worth, and another was prepared to go to GBP550 at least. I wouldn`t mind betting there were several other bidders too. As I said, I suggest you ask Mr Bosley for an illustration. And no, Mr Bosleys` Catalogue does not include a picture of the reverse. What an odd question. As for the implied suggestion from another contributor to this Forum that perhaps the item was less than genuine: that`s always possible. But then again, maybe it is genuine. I know who I`d believe. I merely provided the answer to the original question. In consequence I have to say, I am left asking myself the question, why did I bother? Give me a UK hallmarked silver item anyday. Enjoy. ST. |

Asking to see the reverse of the badge is fundimental to identifying the badges authenticity. You have stated that the badge was attributed to Smith & Wright. This company made, amongst others, a unique slider was only used on early S&W pieces. Therefore, asking to see the reverse of the badge is a very purdent request to make. I am also 100% behind Andy's remarks here re: auction houses and have personnally examined expensive 'anodised aluminium' pieces that have been sold through Bosley's. I have also read the post delivery correspondence between the buyers of such pieces and My Bosley himself and as such I am more than a little hesitent to take any 'exotic' anodised aluminium item purported to have been sold via this auction house with a high level of confidence. If this is the only source of a physical example of this badge then my gut feeling is to ignore it. The badge was officially authorised for issue but whether it was bulk manufactured is another matter altogether. re: Peter Taylors book - I believe though that it came out in the late 1990's so he was probably picking up on what was available to the market then. Sorry if I may have ruffled your feathers a touch S.T. But as they say if you cannot stand the heat stay out of the kitchen... It would be great if badges were made with similar marks to HMs and it would make the collectors life a lot easier too!
I am really not bothered if you would prefer to take the "Expert Advice" of a dealer or Auction house to that of a mere Forum member, I am of the opposite opinion and value the contributions of fellow members over some of the rubbish that comes from the above mentioned outlets! In defence of PTs publication, his book was based on what was in collectors collections at that time and also a list compiled by Walter Lambert for Crown Imperial and JUST LIKE Gaylors list of WW1 economy badges, all have been proven to be rather larger than the actual number of genuine items. I look forward to Chris's book, I just hope Bosley's buy themselves a copy! Andy |

Going as fast as I can - Have just incorporated the Rifle Brigade badge that you sent me into the Fakes and Reproductions section. Not that it is a fake but to illustrate the die stamping proper process. It came today with a big collection of 'possibles' that I will be working on over the next week or so. Regards Chris |
