Default West Riding Artillery

The mystery I have tonight is whether or not the West Riding RGA cap badge is pictured in Kipling and King. I've been looking, but can't find it.

The question I wondered was why the wording on the rocker?

Is there a write up on this badge beyond Wiki etc?

Thanks for taking the time on this.

Hello,

I'm possibly in error but I am assuming that the West Riding Heavy Battery RGA wore the standard Royal Artillery (Territorial Force) cap badge.

There was the West Riding Battery, Royal Horse Artillery, their badge had WEST RIDING in the upper banner and ROYAL HORSE ARTILLERY in the lower banners. This badge has been very heavily faked.

The other badge was W. RIDING in the upper banner and QUO FAS ET GLORIA DUCUNT in the lower banners and was apparently worn by 3rd West Riding Brigade RFA(TF) according to Norman Litchfield. To the best of my knowledge this badge has not yet been faked.

There is no West Riding RGA badge in K&K that I can find, the other reference for this period is Norman Litchfield, Territorial Artillery, 1908-1988.

Thanks, gents. I would infer from your comments that I have acquired the fake badge. No wonder I couldn't find it in K & K. The rockers are worded as you have indicated, Keith, and the stamping is very crisp.

Thanks for the time on this. Photos below. I should have posted them last night, but claim fatigue at the end of the day.

It was also lugged, rather than with a slider and that perhaps, should have tipped me off. But I bought it from a very reputable dealer in Canada. We may have a discussion about the item.

Thanks again.

phil

Your badge is a very common, 'tall orb crown' fake.

Available on ebay every day along with Hampshire, Middlesex, Cadet, Volunteer etc etc.

ANY reputable dealer will know that this is a fake. A real one would cost close to £200.

Thanks, Simon. One of those moments that happens in a long career of collecting. I got it for a chum who is interested in Arty badges from a dealer on ebay. Knowing it's a fake is part of the game, I guess.

$20 USD wasn't that much to pay for it. It is the cost of education on this badge.

Do you have the Litchfield reference pages. I've only got the K&K books.

cheers,

phil

Norman Litchfields collection went to auction and is still listed. Page showing the West Riding RHA as well as the W Riding RFA badges. Both badges were sold for £120 back in 2006, below there very modest reserve!
