Default SS Victorian Cap Badge?

Hello,

I purchased this from a lot a few years back, never really figured out what it was-I know its a Victorian crown- perhaps a Victorian Steam ship (hence SS) Badge?

If anyone could help me indentify it or show me a reference source I would be grateful. I do not collect Victorian items and could maybe use it for trade if it is rare.

Regards

Stu

Stu,
I think that 'SS' on a british badge would stand for 'Sharp Shooters'.
A good pic of the back would be a help here, also. ??
Cheers !
Steve

I'm pretty certain Steve is correct, although I can't find a reference I know I've seen one somewhere and it's probably a Boer War slouch hat badge.

It's extremely rare and might be worth contacting Bosleys for a valuation.

Found it! Bosleys postal auction 22nd April 2009 Lot No.108 Estimate £200-£250.

Anyone know the closing price?

Definently a Sharp Shooters Imperial Yeomanry slouch hat badge.

Default SS badge

Hi
Just for some more info, it's in Kipling & King vol 1, no 1401, and was the
18th Battalion. It was worn on a red & blue rosette.
Cheers,
Alex

Hi Mike,
Just one niggle with the very comprehensive list, there is no 'Horse' in the titles of the 60th and 61st Companies, being correctly designated North Irish and South Irish respectively.
This error has even crept into the latest issue of British Battles and Medals, having previously been correct in the 4th edition.
