Default South African lapel badges

Was going through a tin of miscellaneous badges and found these. Thought that they may be of interest.

Thanks for posting these Dudley,
Always of interest and forms a very nice collection. These are right up my alley. When I have some time to scan I will add the few I have as well.

Here is another interesting lapel badge. It is for an organisation called the Sons of England and was started in Canada and then in South Africa (the only two dominions to do so). The organisation consisted of British ex-patriots living in Canada and South Africa.

Nice to see the 'On Service' as mine has only a fraction of the Orange strip left

I also like lapel badges, which are often more social history than military history. I have quite a few lapel badges, but this one is interesting as I believe that it was worn by radio hams who were part of the locally based reserve attached to the Signals Corps. Can anyone throw any more light on this 'unit' ?
Regards
Mike

Default Liberty Cavalcade

Hi Guys

Thought you might find this interesting. Purchased last week up in Johannesburg during a fleeting visit to the family in that part of SA.

This is a Liberty Cavalcade Lapel badge issued during one of the SA Governor Generals fund raising campaigns, held in Johannesburg between the 23-5-1942 and the 1-6-1942.

There was one other "Liberty Cavalcade" held in Cape Town between the 25-3-1944 and 1-4-1944. A third cavalcade was held in Durban but was named as a "Thanksgiving Cavalcade", held between the 29-7-1944 and the 7-8-1944.

The Governor Generals fund supported many wartime institutions, however, it appears that much of the funding received went to disabled soldiers, their families and the dependants of servicemen.

If anyone has lapel badges for the other 2 cavalcades please post.

Brian

Such a pity Gordon is no longer with us as I am sure he would have had an answer to your query, a fine badge. I will peruse through my copy of SA Radar in WW2 by Peter Brain and see if these chaps get a mention!

Interesting to hear mention of SA Radar in WW2 - my oupa was Basil Schonland who helped get the show on the road.

I believe my father once mentioned working with your oupa at the power company Escom way back in the 60's . Small world, my dad is still alive and doing well at 88!
