A fine looking lot. The pattern 22 SD jacket was certainly an improvement over the horrible fitting earlier one.
The photo on the left; note the sergeant sitting behind the sign with what appears to be an upside down riding instructors badge? CB

Yes Andy, you’re correct, an RE farrier sergeant with the correct, corps arm badge of a GM grenade above stripes for all RE sergeants. This was adopted (ordered) in 1881 and replaced the previous practice of a crown arm badge that, rather like some cavalry regiments, had caused confusion for other arms that were unfamiliar.
