The WO sealed the KEH badge as 8676/1916 in GM
(it is possible that there was a change in 1916, from the initial WO designation in 1915, I'll have to check further at Kew when they are back to normal)

The 2nd KEH was sealed as 8598/1915 in GM - which suggests that is what they were from the beginning

Incidentally, the ACD records are quite clear that 'brass' was replaced by GM in 1897 - different alloy compositions.

Brass is 67% Copper and 33% Zinc. Gilding metal, so called through being able to be easily gilded, is defined in the 1900 Dress Regulations as “eight parts of copper to one part of zinc.” (86,7% Copper, 13,3% Zinc By weight, Royal Army Clothing Department Pattern No. 4480/1897) A brass alloy therefore, but now containing a higher portion of copper than zinc to those previously made.

Fougasse1940.

A couple of mine!

1. Spikey Crown
2. 100% Genuine
3. 2nd KEH - The left I'm 100% happy with and suspect the slider is as per Alan's badge, the Right I'm not so happy about, it has a narrower base to the crown with a rather smooth back?
4. A Wm Copy!

Hi All

First I apologise for the picture(s) quality..... my wobbly extended arms and auto focus didnt quite do the job I was hoping for. However...... the trembling was from looking at this collection of Kings colonials (with collars)

Wow these are stunning, only ever seen repros in my hand or full priced on a dealers list. Where did you come across these ? They are particularly golden in colour, simply wonderful. Thanks for sharing, a happy Colonial!

cheers Dean.

Hi Don

These badges are not seen by the public, unfortunatley, these are collections that have been donated to the NAM.

I was very suprised to learn that the NAM does not really have "full" collections...... my own Leicestershire PAO Yeomanry collection is far more comprehensive than the NAMs ...they only have 6 LY badges of various dates and all Other Ranks...... and a couple of pouch belt badges for the officers and thats it! Sadly, its "we" collectors that hold the full record of most of the Regiments!

Smile Great Pictures

Hi Griff,

Thanks for posting the pictures. Until now it has never been clear in my mind how these badges were worn.

I doubt that any museum can display its entire collection. How did you ever find these? I volunteer at our local museum which has a small collection of military artifacts all donated by former service members or their survivors. My favorite is a uniform which belonged to a member of the USA tank battalion which assaulted Omaha Beach on D-Day. I don't think it is on display and would be easily overlooked if it is. Whoever put your display together did it as a labor of love.

Reading this thread has given me an idea of how to do a virtual display of our military artifacts which I will bounce off a friend who is on the museum board here. If it gets done I will send you a link. See what you've started! Of course your NAM is many times larger but still a good project for volunteers.

Regards,

Don
