Coffin Lugs on Shoulder titles...
I will open a new thread on this.....
Can anyone provide information and evidence as to when "coffin" shaped lugs were introduced on shoulder titles? Many thanks in advance. |

I take it you mean the hexagonal (hexagon) shaped lugs.
It could be possible to determine a date from the earliest title worn with them on. Marc

Hi,
often seen on RND titles: so at least Sept 1914? Cheers, Tim |

Certainly before the Anglo Boer War.

Good day gentlemen, after extensive research I found this page from Rob Miller's album about a J.R.Gaunt catalogue from 1908.Have a look at left, at item 106.It shows Nozzer's 'coffin lugs' being used with a shoulder numeral. I did not find any date for Rob Miller's Gaunt catalogue.

To quote Rob’s album description: ‘This book would appear to date from the period 1904-1910. As it mentions an international exhibition award "ST.LOUIS 1904-GRAND PRIZE" and the accession of His Majesty King Edward VII.’ Regards, JT |

Although there is no mention of fixings in Westlake there are a few dates;
Officers Tropical Dress only, 1881, All Ranks Khaki Dress 1885, Service Dress 1902 to 1908. Also metal titles were worn in various head dress from 1894 to 1902. Metal and anodised aluminium of course were worn at various periods on Battle Dress and Number 2 Dress. I am not sure the answer will be found, I have three piece RFA, and RGA titles some with hexagon lugs and some with ringed lugs. Marc

I tend to agree. Pretty certain I read in a similar thread where someone had a Boer war era title with hex lugs.

I hope I'm not trespassing into the ST field but my interest was aroused because I have a 1908 Patt Liverpool Scot glengarry badge with flat hexagonal lugs
more surprising is that I have three others of the same die with ordinary circular round section lugs D shaped round sect lugs circular flat lugs This badge was worn (and presumably still made) up to 1937 !? |
