Hi, Bantam. This is the KC badge I was talking about earlier. Large with two lug fixings E-W. Larger than military rank badges. What do you think?

Default Prison badges

Hi Bantam,
This is the KC badge I have: 42 x 48mm, brass, with W-E lugs on the back. What do you think?

Hi James,
No I'm afraid it isn't a George V version because of the lower lip and the configuration of the cushion is wrong. The measurements on the correct version are 30 mm at base x 42 mm x 42 mm at its widest point.
The Edward VII version has a lip but was not voided.
Cofion gorau / best wishes

The GviR female staff badge strongly resembles what has traditionally been catalogued as a MPSC GVR badge, i.e. Royal cypher within a wreath with crown above. It seems that recent research has cast doubt on this attribution but has offered little convincing evidence for any alternatives. Could this be a HMP issue?
Hi James,
You are quite right in your assumption regarding the female badges being wrongly catalogued as MPSC.

Default Prison Titles

Here is a photo of the male and female titles worn during 70's 80's and you can see the difference in female pattern that were worn on the jacket breast.

Default Prison cap badges

Thanks Bantam, most interesting to compare the sizes. I will have to see if I have the female version.

Returning to the MPSC/HMP issue, it seems that doubt has also been cast on the attribution of the GvR crown/wreath cap badge, as there appears to be no known photographic evidence of this ever being worn by the MPSC. There has been a certain amount of inconclusive discussion whether it was worn by barrack wardens. Could it be an HMP badge, do you think?

Hi James,
As is always the case with prison badges there as never been any published research into their history and it is thanks to this forum that the subject as had its profile raised.
I have no doubt that if a George V pattern does exists then it is more likely to be a prison badge then MPSC due to the fact that pattern was worn as early as 1938 through to the 70's. photos of which have been posted on a previous thread.
Regards
Bantam

I think it would help if you were more specific. There are a number of different versions. What design of badges are you referring to?

Dave.
