Jennens 4th Royal Irish Dragoons
Amongst the old collection just acquired. Really sad about the blade, but still very glad to have it. Raised Jennens mark...

Lovely. Worth getting a professional repair. Warren Butcher I expect it could make it good as new.

Repairing would involve stripping the original finish and applying a new one?

Hopefully link works, find URLs to concept500 site pics tricky. https://www.britisharmybadges.com/sh...%5B55690%5D/0/ Link should be to a Berks RVC PBP, code: 55690. Without the ‘note’ I’d never guess it had been repaired or re-bronzed. |

Personal choice, if such a badge is repaired and refinished then to me it's been unecessarily messed around with, lost authenticity and value.
I'd rather have a badge repaired with a blob of solder and keeping it's original finish. Imperceptible refinishes and repairs are to me a bit too close to imperceptible fakes and repros. Which doesn't mean that people can't do what they like with their property, I see the attraction in prettifying these things. |

my general standing orders are: if the blades/lugs are damaged and the original finish is less than 50%, I’ll consider repair. Damaged blades/lugs and finish is better than 50%, it stays it as-is.

Completely agree Leigh. All comes down to personal choice a bit like ‘cleaning’ preferences.
My aim in most cases is to leave things be and buy non-broken, but, with a special piece like this where you’ll not find another my own opinion is it’s worth considering especially with fixings as they assists display. But I do definitely see and respect your point of view. Some people do carry on with ‘restoring’ to the point of Trigger’s broom. |

I fully agree to leave as is. A missing blade on a badge like this is nothing worth fussing about.

My two cents - I'd be quite happy leaving it as is. I would rather have an original with a broken blade than one with a new blade and finish added.

Indeed and taking away that degree of originality for ever!
