Nice badge, is that in your collection? It looks like the one in Coleman's book?

Deckhands also wore square rig with round sailors cap with cap tally H.M. Minesweeper. I'm sure there is a picture of such on a thread on here somewhere.

Hi Gents,

A really interesting thread this is turning out to be.

A long shot but can I ask if anyone has any interesting original period correct photographs, perhaps of a trawler or related personal? I'm working on a project and some suitable images would be a nice addition.

Cheerio,

Roy.

Roy and Alex.

Please excuse delay in getting back to you - sent you both pms.

Alex - you are right about the image of the badge being from Coleman's book. I don't have that one! I do however have a copy of the RNR over T arm badge. I'll scan that one on later this week.

As promised here are the images of the RNR (T) arm badge from my own collection. Sorry if it looks a bit bright - it's because I just popped it on the scanner! The red thread is actually quite a bit duller in reality.

I have just noticed that in an earlier post I said that I had 'a copy' of the RNR (T) arm badge. What I should really have said was I have an 'example' of the badge. Just to clear up any confusion, the image I have just scanned is the real thing and NOT a copy. Sorry - I was in a hurry when I sent the earlier message. I should have checked it before submitting it.

Pete

I think this new thread with Royal Navy Transport badges (RNT not RNTS) basically secures your suggestion.

Sorry to reopen an old thread, I inadvertently hadn't subscribed and missed the update.

That cap badge looks great and I'm suspecting they are quite hard to find, is that the case?

Michael

Like chicken's teeth. I think even the examples in Coleman's book are photo-shopped.

I thought that would be the case. It seems all the badges I need to find are like that.

Thanks a lot,

Michael

My grandfather was in the Newfoundland Royal Naval Reserve. Not sure if this the same unit you are talking about or not. Very difficult to find info from this period. Took a long time to find where the records are kept but finally got his service record. Started on the Briton which I think was a training vessel. Then the Attentive 111 (Marmion 11). Should have a bar top and bottom but cant on this keyboard. Then it states Attentive 11 ( all in Newbury) or (Att in Newbury) 111. Then back to the Briton. My uncle told me he was a sharpshooter taking out mines ? Said they were torpedoed and sunk in North sea. I was about 9 when I was told that and don't remember if it was Black or North sea but seems more likely to be the North sea. Only thing I have from his service is his booklet which does not tell much about the service. Cheers Brian

Hi Brian,

Fascinating story, thanks for sharing. Gosh if he was a sharpshooter taking out mines, there is a good chance he would have used a rifle just like the Naval issue Lee-Speed I have (pic attached). These are so rare, it could have even been this one!

Cheers,

Roy
