New name added to War Memorial

Neal Turkington's name added to Portadown war memorial Lieutenant Neal Turkington's name was added to the war memorial on Saturday A Portadown soldier killed in Afghanistan two years ago has had his name added to the town's war memorial. Lieutenant Neal Turkington, from the 1st Battalion The Royal Gurkha Rifles, was 26 years old when he was killed by a renegade Afghan soldier in July 2010. He had been serving with his battalion in Nahr-e Saraj in Helmand province. The soldier's name was the first added to the monument since World War II. Hundreds of people, including Lieutenant Turkington's family, attended the service to remember him. Soldiers from The Royal Gurkha Rifles and civic representatives were among those present. Two other soldiers from the same battalion, Major James Joshua Bowman, from Wiltshire, and Corporal Arjun Purja Pun, from Nepal, were also killed in h the July 2010 attack. The ceremony was organised by the Portadown Branch of the Royal British Legion. |
