Default 4th Gurkha badge on ebay

Did any forum member buy this badge ? I must admit the price surprised me.

I think it's a WW2 theatre made badge - but it could be a sweetheart. I thought I'd bid a stupid amount for it but was outbid ! I know it wasn't Ashok Nath as he had some doubts about it being a cap badge. Tim

Wow! Someone paid quite a lot! I'd seen the badge myself and quite liked it but really not adding to the collection anymore so did not bid.
But otherwise it's a well made badge that I would have liked to have.

Incidentally, the same badge as above is on sale along with several other Gurkha badges on ebay with a seller mufc21. I think they are all poor cast copies or fakes. I hope nobody goes for them. Caveat Emptor!

Hi Khyber - I just sent you a note. The 4GR on ebay from MUFC21 is quite different to the one that just went for £241 - that one was a rare, possibly one off, theatre made badge hence the price. But the one for sale is also a 100% genuine period piece. Tim

I may well have spoken too soon. I've just been told by someone who knows Gurkha badges that those badges on ebay are good. I'm not an expert and make a judgement based on photos.
The problem with Indian/Gurkha badges is that so many are now being faked/copied it becomes very difficult to tell. That is one reason I've more or less stopped collecting as unless you get them in hand it becomes difficult to tell for sure. I was even told by a firm in India that used to make badges for the British-Indian army that witn the technology now available even silver hallmarks can be faked. It's really sad if you're a collector!
