HELP APPRECIATED WITH NAVAL BUTTON
Hello everyone.
Could a Forum member help identify this naval button. Have looked online but not found an exact match. It was manufactured by Walter Williams, London. This would seem to indicate 1822+, but I may be completely wrong! Kind regards, Malcolm. |

Help Appreciated with Naval Button
Hi Malcolm,
This appears to be the 1825-27 button for Flag Officers. Prior to 1812 naval buttons didn't feature a crown. That was only adopted in 1812. Buttons remained flat at that time and the horizontal lines forming the background to the crown were of an oval design. In 1825 the oval lines were changed to a circular design. From 1827 onwards buttons were to be slightly domed with a rim in the form of a rope and the same designs as before. Since your button is flat but has a circular design for the horizontal lines it has to date to between 1825-27. Pete
