My view is that it's overpriced. The design was sealed circa 1937 and was replaced by the smaller version in the 1950's before the final a/a version. There is no way of dating it after 1937-'50s.

I don't know what was sealed in 1937, but the badge on eBay in the opening post is a lost wax cast copy, so don't buy it.

I’ve been trying in vain to find a previous post on this exact variant. A few years ago I came across a WW2 newspaper or article of some sort in which this very badge was featured, therefore placing it firmly in that era (and potentially prior, of course). I recall posting the printed image here on the forum for reference purposes.

I’ll keep searching but not holding out much hope. Apologies.

JT

Thanks JT as it came with my grandads stuff and he joined WW2 plus it has that feel of a WW2 badge I think. Be interesting to see what you can find, thanks

If it's by Ernest Martin, which I think it was stated in the original thread, it will be 1940's.
Alot of his work is on a site called JSTOR.
Some interesting articles.

Neil.

Hi Neil
Just for interest sake, why do you call that a lost was copy? What would the point be of making a lost wax copy of such a cheap badge, isn't the process quite involved? I have only ever heard of it being done for silver badges and 3D type badges like Gordon's officer badges.
Thanks, cheers,
Alex

Hi Alex,

The eBay badge has to be separated from the badge in the article, because like every badge I've seen for sale they are always cast and have too many points of similarity with the mould below, which was made sometime in the 1980's and passed around various repro makers and that is why you can come across it in brass, silver & white metal, with blades loops and sliders.

I'd really like to see a crisply die struck example, or even a quality die cast one, but am yet to do so.

Maybe one of the Norfolk collector's who frequent the forum could weigh in with their thoughts. As I stated in post 3 I don't profess to know about what was sealed back in 1937, but I would not expect it to be poorly cast.

Neil
