John, the album dates from 30s/40s most of the pages are blank. The cig cards are J.Players 1903 Badges and flags British Regts but they are glued in and in very poor condition.
A few GV & GV1 penny & halfpenny stamps. Lots of RA & RE
letterhead crests many Victorian examples. Another drawn example.

Most interesting, I was very kindly given a binder put together in the mid 1940`s on badges of the Kings Liverpools which contains a number of hand drawn badges like the one`s below- very nice things to have.

I wonder if people had more time then to produce such things.

Has anyone come across the book 'Badges of HM Services' published by William Briggs & Co of Manchester (with text by Major Edwards). Published in 1943, it is in full colour, and illustrates a great number of badges based on embroidery produced by The Royal School of Needlework in London. Its actually a pretty useful resource, and the images look a lot like the drawings posted here.

Peter,

I think I have a copy somewhere but I may be mistaking it for the booklet attached.

I will have another search tomorrow.

Peter
There are similar coloured illustrations in a copy I have of "His Majesty's Regiments of the British Army" published by Metro-Provincial Publications Ltd in 1949. Here is the page for the King's Regiment from my album:

I had a chance meeting a few years back with a very elderly and frail gent whilst sat on a bench in a shopping centre.

He was attired in Regimental blazer and his original beret, though regrettably I don't recall his unit.

Whilst passing the time of day he showed me several small embroidered items that he had had in his possesion since being given them by schoolgirls during WW2. The items were mainly depictions of flowers made especially by the girls to give to convalescing soldiers who were residents of the then military hospital in Netley Hampshire. He himself was one of these soldiers.

He went on to tell me that in order to pass the time and as part of their convalescence, the soldiers would draw the badges of their units in detail and then use these drawings as templates for the purpose of embroidering the insignia.

Could the drawings featured in this thread have been produced for this purpose, at possibly an earlier period?

Regards to all

Ry

Another one unfinished this time, the ribbon and crest are from a regimental Christmas card also from the album.

No - that's another classic, of course. My copy is a hardback, and given the cost of producing it at the time, it is pretty incredible. I'll do some scans so you can see what I mean!

Best wishes
Peter

Peter,
I dont have the book you mentioned, but the name Briggs rang a bell,

I have the Crest of the Kings Regiment in the "Crests of H.M. Services" series by Briggs ( copies of the front and back cover attached ) I also have the 2 transfers which were included.I presume that is the same company who published your book.

Yes, that's the one - and the Royal College of Needlework is seen in both!
