Never worn on the Border, not even cap/beret badges...we all wore bush hats minus all insignia apart from name tags which was often the case to prevent theft . The UDF issued many blackened badges during the war but with time it largely wore off exposing the brass beneath. Nice to see originals. BC |

Photo of NMR soldiers at the beginning of WW2. One can see the helmet flashes and the badge being worn on the front of the helmet in the case of some of them.

Have to disagree.... CTH definitely wore badges on the Border and they were painted black for the time up North. It's quite possible NMR did the same thing. Cheers, Alex |

Hi Iain
Some of my NMR titles. When I was with them we used a mix of the square lugged chrome ones and the clutch pin ones, depending on how lucky you were from the QM! Not sure of the brass plate one, WWI? Also, a pic of some of my better SA badges, including my collection of NMR badges. Cheers, Alex |

Hi Alex,
very, very nice collection you have! Your # 3 seems to have blades? I see you mix your BMR with the NMR? I also do that as they were so closely linked and ultimately amalgamated. Thanks for sharing, regards, Iain Quote:

The last I found was this awful Italian made example!

Hi Frank,
Are you sure this is Italian made as this badge looks very typical of Egyptian sand cast badge with Egyptian type copper lugs. Steven |

Yes, when I eventually am ready to frame these I was intending on adding the BMR badges somewhere. I'm hoping to get a few more bits and pieces before I put them in a frame though. Cheers, Alex |

Hi Frank
I wouldn't be too quick to condemn these badges.... The beret sized badges seem to be one of the hardest to find and my example is also a sand-cast one. I have only had one proper WM one which I stupidly swopped as a beginner collector and haven't seen one since, though I'm sure they're around. I think that many of the troops up North used the sand cast ones. I don't know much about the dating of these badges but I wonder if they came into use after the Regiment was already deployed and perhaps these were the norm to start? It wasn't long after the war that the rampant horse badge came into use so they can't have been used for long. The larger helmet badges are fairly common on the other hand. Do any of you SA collectors know any more about these badges? Cheers, Alex |

Hello Alex,
You should be able to get another beret badge quite quickly they are fairly common and were normally worn on the small green rectangle, certainly in Italy, I don't really like them at all! Regards Frank Quote:

Hello Steven,
I think I should amend my description to "awful campaign made" it does have an Egyptian look to it, although, I do know these were certainly worn in Italy. Anyway, I don't like them! Kind regards Frank |

Sorry Frank,
like them or not, they're here to stay! Here's 3 examples of the beret badge NMR beret 001.jpg NMR beret 002.jpg NMR beret 003.jpg A brass, a not sure and a lead, all cast! The "not sure" is a very shiny silver colour. There is no hallmark and isn't that well made. regards, Iain
