brass letter 'Y'
Can anyone in the know assist me with this letter?
It's most probably part of a shoulder title but I haven't come across it worn as a separate part. And if so, would it signify Yeomanry or rather a unit letter? I am also wondering if it could have been removed from a Yeomanry title! It has a loop at centre rear, fixed vertically (normal method, allowing for a horizontal split-pin attachment). 2cm high. Hi Andrew,
Could very well be. I need to hunt out an 'I' now. I suppose such a title would be generic? Thanks again GTB |

Y
I believe that these letters were used both as part of the Boer war titles, and between the world wards as a separate part of a Yeomanry title i.e. Y/ separate RA etc.

Hi All,
As well as letters being separate here's an example of I and Y fused together. (22mm high) Cheers, Tinto |

Sharpshooters shoulder title from 1920 to 1939 was a single 'Y' over an 'RTC'.
Both my own example and the drawing/illustration in the 'Mollo' book show a plain 'Y' but a stylised 'RTC' as your 'Y' example. This may be relevant and reflect a minor change to the 'Y' over the nineteen years. PeterA |

Thanks to Stephen( Badjez ) I have also seen a "Y" worn on a collar below a Royal Artillery collar badge by a member of a Yeomanry Regiment converted to R.A.( similar to the "T" worn by Territorial officers on their collars ).

Letter "I" or number "1"?
The IY title reminds me that i have confused the I (square serif at top) with a numeral 1. The number should have a triangular serif at the top.

The Essex Imperial Yeomanry wore a three part shoulder title of E / I / Y as three individual letters, in a triangular formation E over I & Y. Your Y is too large to be part of that.
The 3/1st Essex Yeo wore a two part E/ Y title. The example I have is 19mm height. As Essex Yeomanry a two part Y/RFA title was worn circa 1921 like the examples referenced earlier. From the dimensions your Y could potentially be part of one of those. |

Hello,
Thought you may like to see the three part E / I Y title Expat Yeoman mentioned. Both pairs of titles (6 letters) are 19mm height are have round copper lugs. Hope this is of interest. Pat |

Pat, a fabulous uniform, thanks for posting.
Here is my E / I Y title (ex Bosleys) - some slight differences in the lettering, most notably the Y. It has a triangular backing plate to help with the spacing. I don't have the title to hand right now but from memory the lugs on this are squared and brass, and are vertical rather than the horizontal ones on yours, so it looks like there are a couple of patterns out there. |
